Vince went into semi-retirement after Garcia died. He wasn't in the mood to play music, for almost another year. Then we started hearing about the dity deeds behind the Grateful Dead scene. Read more about it at www.vincewelnick.com

Now it isn't such a shock that his own family even believes that suicide is possible according to the San Jose MERCURY's obituary...

How very sad. I confess to not being a big Vince fan, though I thought there were some real standout moments early on that I still like to listen to..first time I saw them without Hornsby was at Albany in June of 92, and I though Vince stood out and I was encouraged
at how well he was doing. That was the last time I saw the Dead as it turned out..and now I listen to shows on here and elsewhere and see that he added a great deal to the music..no..he wasn't Brent..and Brent wasn't Keith and Keith wasn't Pigpen. Each brought their own to the band.

I'm saddened by what I read on the site mentioned here and his treatment by the rest of the band.

RIP Vince, and thank you for what you brought to this phenomenon known as The Grateful Dead.

I will also admit to not being such a huge fan of Vince's but he was FAMILY! I am very sad to hear about bashing from Deadheads and his mistreatment by band members. Vince adored Jerry and Jerry him. That't the most important of all right now because well, they are together. I am so sorry for this tragedy.
Peace..................

When Vince first got the job, he had a very scant knowlege of their music. The Dead picked him, apparently they thought he was worthy. He did a great job of immersing himself in their music and fitting himself into the keyboard slot, on the fly, working without a net.

I liked Vince a lot. I liked his interpretation of the music, liked his style, thought he was a very worthy member of my favorite band.

I can't give any respect to anyone who says he didn't do a GREAT job, or that he was in any way unworthy of respect with regards to his time with the Dead.

If there's a Rock and Roll heaven, well, just imagine it yourself.
